Governor Udom Emmanuel reconstituted the present-day AKSEPWMA with Obong (Dr.) Prince Ikim as the Board Chairman. At assumption of duties, the agency first created a new road map for the execution of its functions

A volume of 18,000 tons of enormous municipal and household waste is generated on a daily basis in Akwa Ibom State, and there is a site which temporarily harbours the generated waste, situated at a Government Reserved Area, Uyo- village road, Uyo, quite remote from residential area.

It was modeled to create a convenient waste management system in local areas, through partnership with Local Government councils and related environmental personnel
such as the supervisors for environment etc.

Through the Agency's operational model, in five years, Akwa Ibom State has emerged the Cleanest State for 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, back-to- back (CUN State of the Nation Report, 2022).

Invest in and deploy ICT to create Waste Management Innovations and launch the refuse to Riches Initiative to promote recycling through building a Fully Integrated Waste Management System in Akwa Ibom

The last four years have witnessed a sharp expansion in activities devoted to increasing performance of AKSEPWMA. These activities are not without compliance with global best practices. They align squarely
with the United Nations Environmental Programs (UNEP) best practices.

It was the world's most dreadful nightmarish moment that sent shivers through the spines of the global fabric.
Before Governor Emmanuel assumed office, roadside trading was one of the most worrisome challenges to the Akwa Ibom environment and was fast becoming an untamable culture.
Akpayak Community located about the barracks road in Uyo, had hosted a dump site for the waste generated from Uyo capital city for years and was decommissioned
In the year 2000, the Obong Victor Atta-led administration established the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) by a Parliamentary Act, Cap 47, 2000.
